The Palm Springs City Council voted unanimously Thursday approve paying $5.91 million to former residents of the city's Section 14 area.

The Palm Springs city council on Thursday unanimously approved a $5.9 million reparations settlement with former residents of a largely Black neighborhood that was leveled in the 1960s for commercial development.

The city of Palm Springs, Calif., will pay nearly $6 million in reparations to Black and Brown families who were displaced from a neighborhood there during the 1960s. The tentative settlement will be split among families who had lived in the neighborhood known as Section 14.
