Connor McDavid joining Wayne Gretzky as the only player to score 2,000 points is much more likely than you might think.

With a second-period goal against the Nashville Predators on Thursday, the Edmonton Oilers captain became both the fourth fastest and fourth youngest player to reach 1,000 NHL points. He capped off a 3-2 win by setting up Darnell Nurse’s overtime winner for point No. 1,001.

McDavid became the 999th player to reach the 1,000-point plateau in NHL history. Only legends Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Mike Bossy have reached the mark faster. The Oilers star has lived up to the billing that was advertised for him when he first came into the league as the first overall pick in the 2015 draft.
